Health Services at St. Stephens Indian School
At St. Stephens Indian School, we believe that good emotional and physical health are essential for student learning and success. Our health services are designed to support the well-being of students and staff while creating a safe and healthy environment for learning.
On-Site School Nurse
We have a registered nurse on staff who provides a wide range of health services, including:
- Health Care: Assessing and supporting students with illnesses or injuries, administering medications, conducting health screenings, ensuring immunization compliance, and developing individualized health plans for students with medical conditions.
- Promoting Safety: Minimizing the spread of contagious illnesses and addressing potential hazards to keep our school safe.
- Health Education: Teaching health-related lessons and promoting healthy habits among students and staff.
Head Lice Policy
Students are not excluded from school due to head lice to avoid disrupting learning. If lice are detected, parents/guardians will receive a notification letter with treatment options and follow-up instructions. Students will be rechecked within a week of treatment. Persistent cases may require consultation with a healthcare provider.
Health Screenings
We conduct annual health screenings for:
- Vision and Hearing: For kindergarteners, new students, and students with a teacher or special education referrals. If concerns arise, we notify parents/guardians to seek further evaluation.
- Dental Health (Optional): Screenings and sealants for primary-grade students with signed consent. Parents/guardians are informed if additional dental care is recommended.
Guidelines for Student Illness
If your child is sick, they should remain at home to prevent spreading illness. Students with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or fever should stay home until they are symptom-free for 24 hours without medication.
If a student becomes ill during the school day, the school nurse will evaluate them. Parents/guardians will be contacted if the student needs to be picked up due to a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or other contagious symptoms.
Immunization Requirements
Students must have up-to-date immunization records on file to comply with Wyoming Department of Health regulations. Required immunizations include:
- DTaP (5 doses)
- IPV (3–4 doses)
- MMR (2 doses)
- Hepatitis B (3 doses)
- Hib series completion
- Varicella (2 doses or history of chickenpox)
For students in grades 7–12, one booster of TDaP is also required.
Students without updated records or valid exemptions may be excluded from school. Those on a verified catch-up schedule may attend during the vaccination process.
Exemptions
Parents may file for:
- Medical Exemptions: Requires a physician’s statement and a notarized form.
- Religious Exemptions: Requires a notarized exemption form.
During outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases, unvaccinated students may be temporarily excluded from school.
Medication Administration
We follow strict guidelines for administering medications:
- Prescription Medications: They must be in the original pharmacy packaging with a signed authorization form. Students may carry some medications, like EpiPens or inhalers, with written authorization.
- Over-the-Counter Medications: Will only be administered with signed parental consent and at the nurse's discretion.
- Non-FDA Approved Medications: Will not be administered at school and should be given at home.
Parents/guardians are responsible for delivering and retrieving medications from the school. Unclaimed medications will be disposed of after the school year or their expiration date.
